Making Your Internet Business Successful
In order to be successful on the internet, one needs to treat their Internet business as a business. So what do I mean by making or treating your Internet business as a business? Most people are drawn to the Internet buy dreams of throwing up a website, having tons of visitors, and making a lot of money quickly. Well there are those lucky few, and I still envy them. However, for the majority of us it takes a lot of work to be successful, and that is why a lot of people fail. They hop from one idea to another, and then they wonder why they are not making any money or losing money. I suggest treat your Internet endeavors as a business.
First, as with any business you must have goals. If you are currently in a day job, your goal should be to eventually replace that income. At first, however, set smaller more attainable goals, say 100 visitors a day by such and such day, or an additional income of $500 a month by a certain date.
Before you do any of this you should have a clear vision of what you want to do. Maybe is making and selling websites, maybe is creating a website that is an authority in Dog Health, or Parenting Young Kids. Once you come up with a topic you are passionate about, you will want to do what is called keyword research to see how many potential people your topic draws from the Internet searchers. I will discuss keyword search in a later article in more detail. The point I am trying to make is it is important to have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish, and it must be something you are passionate about. Why? There are many ups and downs and if you are not passionate about your what you are trying to do, you will get discouraged easily and give up. Its this passion that will help you through some of the hurdles.
So now that you have an idea what you want to do, one question many people ask is should they incorporate? That is an individual choice you must discuss with your lawyer and I cannot advise anyone on this. I can however explain why I decided to incorporate and some of the benefits.
One of the biggest benefits of incorporating is that you are a legal company. It tells people you are serious about what you are trying to do. It also helps gave me extra motivation. With incorporation it is easier to join the Better Business Bureau and Chambers of Commerce, which I highly recommend if you are selling any of your own products, or providing any services. One thing I learned is offline promotion can be very powerful. Of course there is more paperwork with becoming incorporated, but by doing so it holds me more accountable to my business and provides that extra motivation.
Whether or not one incorporates, it is important to seperate your business activities from your personal activities. Check with your accountant on how to best do this, but some of the many things I do is have seperate checking accounts, savings, credit cards, phone lines, computers, and if you can, setup a seperate space for your home office.
Whether or not you incorporate you need to treat yourself as a business. You need to plan, you need to schedule regular time, you need to set goals for yourself. Basically, you need to make yourself accountable for your own success and not blame someone else when something goes wrong. There will be many mistakes, some more costly and time consuming than others. What will make you successful is how do you handle those mistakes? Do you blame someone or do you make yourself ultimately responsible for your actions and try to learn from those mistakes and move on? Those that are able to learn from their mistakes will be the ones that will have the ultimate success. Its time to role up your sleeves and get to work, its time to get excited about your internet business, and its time to be accountable for your own success and have a can-do attitude.
Finally, you may be knocked off course from time to time and have some detours along the road, but try to never forget what your goals are. Instead learn from those detours and try to figure out how to get back on course. Ultimately, how you will handle the bumps in the road will determine how successful you will be. To your success!!
